RheinEnergie Köln was one of Germany's prominent professional basketball clubs during the 2000s. Founded in 1999 as the Cologne 99ers, the organization entered the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) in 2001 under the name RheinEnergy Cologne, later becoming RheinEnergie Köln. Under renowned head coach Svetislav Pešić, Cologne quickly established itself as a competitive force, reaching the German championship finals in its inaugural Bundesliga season in 2002. The club enjoyed its most successful period between 2004 and 2007, winning three German Cup titles (2004, 2005 and 2007) and securing its first German championship in 2006 under head coach Saša Obradović. The championship victory over ALBA Berlin marked the greatest achievement in the club's history. RheinEnergie Köln also competed internationally in the ULEB Cup and made its EuroLeague debut during the 2006/07 season, facing some of Europe's leading basketball clubs. Notable players associated with the organization included Marvin Willoughby, Saša Obradović, Immanuel McElroy, Aleksandar Nađfeji and Johannes Strasser. Following the withdrawal of its title sponsor, the team returned to the Köln 99ers name in 2007. Financial difficulties eventually led to the end of its Bundesliga operations in 2009. The club's basketball heritage lives on through the RheinStars Köln organization, which continues the city's basketball tradition and commitment to youth development. RheinEnergie Köln remains an important chapter in German basketball history, remembered for its domestic titles, European appearances and contribution to professional basketball in Cologne.
