The project focuses on items from a private collection and combines photographic research, visual comparison, provenance information, physical characteristics and documented evidence to build detailed records for individual pieces of sports memorabilia.
All photomatch research presented on PhotoMatchForensics relates exclusively to items from the private collection. PhotoMatchForensics does not offer commercial authentication, appraisal, photomatching or memorabilia verification services and does not accept external items for examination.
PhotoMatchForensics grew out of a long-standing personal interest in game-worn sports memorabilia, photography and the research behind individual pieces.
Photomatching and memorabilia research are a hobby for me. What began with collecting jerseys developed into a deeper interest in examining photographs, identifying unique characteristics and reconstructing the history and provenance of individual items.
PhotoMatchForensics was created as a way to document that research in a structured and transparent format. The project brings together my private collection, photographic comparisons, provenance records and supporting evidence in one growing research archive.
The objective is not to provide a commercial authentication service, but to document the collection, preserve the research behind it and share the results with collectors and others interested in game-worn memorabilia.
Collecting sports memorabilia and researching the stories behind individual items is my hobby. For a long time, I was looking for an application that could keep my collection, photographs, provenance, reference material and research together in one organised place.
Uploading photographs to Instagram or Facebook was never enough for me. Social media is useful for sharing individual moments, but over time posts become scattered, context gets lost and the collection becomes difficult to review. It also does not provide a structured way to document sources, comparison steps, visual findings or the reasoning behind a research conclusion.
That is why I created PMF - MatchPoint Studio. The application grew directly from the way I wanted to document my own collection: one local workspace for item records, photographs, provenance, documents, reference images, notes, photomatch comparisons and PDF reports.
I did not want another social-media feed. I wanted a lasting, searchable research record for every item in my collection.
MatchPoint Studio is offered free of charge for personal, non-commercial use so other collectors can organise and preserve their own research as well. The software is a documentation and comparison tool; it does not independently authenticate or certify memorabilia.

The objective is to identify unique characteristics that are visible both on the physical item and in historical photographic evidence.
A strong photomatch does not simply establish that a item looks similar to one visible in a photograph. The goal is to identify individual characteristics capable of distinguishing that specific item from other jerseys produced in the same style.
A game-worn item is a item that was actually worn by an athlete during a game or competitive event.
Supporting evidence may include provenance, team or manufacturer tagging, third-party authentication, documented wear, photographic evidence or a successful photomatch.
Game-used is frequently used more broadly for equipment that was used during competition.
This may include jerseys, shoes, helmets, gloves, balls and other equipment depending on the sport and the item being documented.
A game-issued item was prepared or made available for an athlete or team for potential game use but has not been established as having actually been worn or used.
Correct tagging, sizing and customization alone do not necessarily prove that the item saw game action.
Authentication may evaluate construction, tagging, customization, materials, provenance and whether an item is consistent with equipment produced for a particular athlete, team, season or period. Photomatching attempts to go one step further by connecting the individual physical item to photographic evidence through identifiable characteristics.
PhotoMatchForensics approaches each item as an individual research case.
The process begins with documentation of the physical item, including manufacturer information, tagging, sizing, customization, condition, wear characteristics, provenance and other relevant details.
Available historical photographs and video material are then examined for characteristics that can be compared with the physical item. Potential identifying features are documented individually rather than relying solely on the overall visual appearance of the item.
Image resolution, camera angle, lighting, movement, compression, obstruction and the visibility of the relevant area can all affect the reliability of a comparison. For this reason, PhotoMatchForensics distinguishes between different levels of confidence and does not treat every visual similarity as a definitive match.
PhotoMatchForensics is built around documented observations rather than assumptions. The purpose of the research is to evaluate the available evidence, not to force an item toward a predetermined conclusion.
Conclusions should be supported by observable physical characteristics, photographic material, provenance and other documented evidence.
Limitations in image quality, visibility or available evidence are recorded rather than hidden behind a stronger conclusion than the material supports.
Research records, source information and supporting evidence are documented so that the reasoning behind a conclusion remains traceable.
New photographs, better source material or additional provenance may strengthen, weaken or revise an earlier assessment.
A comparison may support, weaken or contradict an existing attribution. Negative findings are documented with the same importance as positive photomatch evidence. An item that cannot be connected to the available photographic record — or that can be distinguished from the item visible in historical imagery — remains a meaningful research result.

Each jersey represents a piece of sporting history. The goal is to preserve not only the item itself, but also the evidence and research that connects it to the player, season, game and moment in which it may have been used.
