Historical Context, Season Information & Player Background
The 2001–02 season represents one of the most significant chapters in the history of Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius. Founded only five years earlier in 1997, the club had rapidly established itself as Lithuania’s principal challenger to the long-standing dominance of Žalgiris Kaunas. Under head coach Jonas Kazlauskas, Rytas assembled a disciplined and talented roster combining experienced Lithuanian players with influential international additions.
American point guard Walsh Jordan played an important role in the team’s success. After completing his collegiate career in the United States, he continued his professional career in Europe and adapted effectively to the tactical and controlled style of European basketball. As the team’s floor general, Jordan helped organize the offense, control the tempo and provide leadership throughout domestic and international competition.
The season culminated in a historic Triple Crown. Lietuvos Rytas won the Lithuanian Basketball League championship, the Lithuanian Cup and the North European Basketball League championship. Capturing all three major competitions established the club as one of Northern Europe’s strongest teams and marked a decisive stage in its development. The accomplishments of the 2001–02 squad helped lay the foundation for the club’s later international success, including its ULEB Cup victory in 2005 and EuroCup championship in 2009.
For Walsh Jordan, the 2001–02 campaign remains one of the defining achievements of his professional career. As the starting point guard and one of the team’s key leaders, he contributed to a season that continues to hold exceptional significance for Lietuvos Rytas supporters. Jerseys from this period are closely associated with the beginning of the club’s rise to international prominence and serve as lasting artifacts of its historic Triple Crown campaign.
The Jersey That Started It All
The provenance of this jersey begins with a 14-year-old Lietuvos Rytas supporter during what was either his first or second season following the club. He had already developed a passion for collecting players’ autographs, but his greatest ambition was to own an original game-worn basketball jersey.
Walsh Jordan was one of his favorite players. Throughout the season, the young supporter regularly waited for Jordan after games, congratulated him on victories and spoke with him. Their repeated encounters developed into a personal connection. Following one away game that ended late at night, Jordan even gave the young fan a ride home—an experience that reinforced the supporter’s impression of him as an approachable, humble and generous professional.
When Lietuvos Rytas won the championship at the end of the season, the supporter recognized that the final might provide his best opportunity to obtain a game-worn jersey. Immediately after the championship game, while security personnel were focused on preventing spectators from entering the court, he managed to enter the players’ tunnel and waited for the team to return to the locker room.
When Walsh Jordan appeared, the supporter asked him for his jersey. Jordan explained that he had already promised his jerseys to another fan. Nevertheless, he decided to give the young supporter the white jersey he had worn during the championship final. Jordan also honored his earlier commitment by later providing the other fan with his black jersey.
For the 14-year-old recipient, the jersey was still much too large to wear. His mother therefore folded the lower section upward and sewed it into place, shortening the garment to fit him. The horizontal seam that remains visible near the bottom of the jersey is a direct physical remnant of this alteration and an important part of its individual history.
The jersey became one of the first basketball jerseys he ever owned and inspired a collecting tradition that continued for many years. With growing confidence, he began approaching other players before each new season and asking whether they would give him a jersey after the campaign had ended. What began with the Walsh Jordan championship jersey eventually developed into a substantial personal collection.
The white number 10 jersey remained in his possession for approximately 23 years. More than two decades after the championship season, he was invited to appear on a radio program to discuss his experiences as a basketball supporter. While preparing for the interview, he searched online to establish precisely when these events had taken place. During that research, he unexpectedly discovered an article written by someone searching for a particular Walsh Jordan jersey from the 2001–02 season—the same jersey that had remained in his closet since his childhood.
For the founder of PhotoMatch Forensics, the search for an authentic Walsh Jordan game-worn jersey from the historic championship campaign had begun in the early 2000s. After following Jordan’s performances and admiring his leadership on the court, he spent more than 20 years pursuing this specific piece. Despite extensive contact with collectors, repeated searches of auctions and numerous leads across Europe, no authenticated example became available.
The discovery in 2024 finally connected the two stories. The original recipient possessed the jersey the PhotoMatch Forensics founder had been searching for, complete with a direct player-to-fan chain of provenance and a distinctive physical alteration linked to the recipient’s childhood. After learning of the long search and the intended forensic documentation of the jersey, the original owner agreed to sell it directly to the founder.
The acquisition brought an extraordinary search to an end. It was the proverbial needle in a haystack: an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire the white jersey worn by Walsh Jordan during the LKL championship final, preserved for more than two decades by the young supporter who personally received it from the player.
The jersey is now preserved within the PhotoMatch Forensics archive, where its provenance, construction details, visible game use and photographic characteristics can be formally documented. The shortened lower section and surviving horizontal seam are not merely later modifications; they are tangible evidence of the jersey’s personal history following its presentation after the championship game.
More than any other jersey in the collection, this piece carries exceptional emotional importance. It represents the fulfillment of a search lasting more than two decades, the childhood story of the supporter who originally received it and a direct connection to Walsh Jordan and one of the greatest seasons in Lietuvos Rytas history. Its championship-final provenance, long-term ownership history and distinctive physical characteristics make it an outstanding artifact from the club’s historic 2001–02 Triple Crown season.
