The Item

This white Hamburg Towers jersey was game worn by Croatian guard Hrvoje Kovačević during the 2017–18 ProA season. Manufactured by K1X as part of its Hardwood performance line, the size XL jersey is constructed from lightweight white mesh with reinforced gray seams. The front features the Hamburg Towers shield, the “MORE THAN BASKETBALL” slogan, the Basketball Bundesliga league mark and Kovačević’s black number 9. The reverse displays “KOVAČEVIĆ,” the edel-optics.de sponsor branding and a second number 9. The jersey exhibits clear evidence of use, including fabric pulls, loose fibers, localized discoloration and general wear across the mesh surface. Particularly notable is the German flag printed above the front number. During this period, the flag was intended to identify locally classified German players. Kovačević was Croatian, making its presence on his jersey a production error and an unusual, individually identifiable characteristic. Following the final home game of the season, Kovačević personally examined and recognized the jersey before signing it. He added his autograph and the handwritten inscription “GAME WORN” to the front, directly acknowledging its use. The same jersey is also documented in the official Hamburg Towers game-day program, where Kovačević is pictured wearing it in his player portrait. The combination of the erroneous German flag, visible wear, contemporary printed documentation and Kovačević’s personal recognition provides a strong and distinctive evidentiary profile.
Historical Documentation

Story & Historical Context

Hrvoje Kovačević joined the Hamburg Towers in the summer of 2017, bringing extensive experience from Croatian, German and Polish basketball. Born in Našice, Croatia, the 1.90-meter guard had represented his country at multiple youth European championships and previously played for leading Croatian clubs including Cedevita Zagreb and Cibona Zagreb. With Cibona, he won two Croatian championships as well as the Croatian Cup and Supercup. Before arriving in Hamburg, Kovačević had already gained experience in German basketball with Mitteldeutscher BC and MLP Academics Heidelberg. His versatility, composure and ability to play both guard positions made him an experienced addition to a Towers team still working toward its long-term objective of reaching the Basketball Bundesliga. The 2017–18 campaign was Hamburg’s fourth season in the ProA. The Towers finished the regular season with a 13–17 record and narrowly missed the playoffs. Although the season did not produce the desired postseason appearance, it became an important transitional year in the club’s development. Several members of the team, including Kovačević, remained part of the organization and contributed to the historic promotion campaign that followed in 2018–19. This number 9 jersey carries an unusual production characteristic: a German flag was mistakenly printed on the front, despite Kovačević being a Croatian player. The flag was intended as an identifier for locally classified German players. Its incorrect placement created a distinctive feature that separates this jersey from a normally produced Kovačević uniform and contributes to its individual identity. The jersey’s provenance is further supported by two direct forms of documentation. It appeared in the official game-day program as the jersey worn by Kovačević for his player portrait. After the final home game of the 2017–18 season, Kovačević personally recognized the garment when it was presented to him. He then signed the front and added the inscription “GAME WORN,” directly confirming its use. Kovačević remained with Hamburg for the following season and helped the Towers win the 2018–19 ProA championship and secure promotion to the Basketball Bundesliga. He retired from professional basketball after that achievement. This jersey therefore represents not only his first season in Hamburg but also the transitional period immediately preceding one of the most important accomplishments in the club’s history. Its visible wear, mistaken national flag, appearance in contemporary team media and direct player acknowledgment combine to make it a particularly well-documented artifact from the early history of the Hamburg Towers.
