The Item
This Pittsburgh Pirates road jersey was issued to infielder Brian Friday for the 2011 Major League Baseball season.
Manufactured by Majestic as part of its Authentic Collection, the jersey is constructed from gray performance mesh and features a full button front. “PITTSBURGH” is applied across the chest in the franchise’s traditional black Old English lettering with gold trim. Black-and-gold piping appears around the neckline and sleeve openings, while the MLB silhouetted-batter logo is positioned below the rear collar.
The back carries Friday’s surname in individually applied black letters with gold outlines on a matching gray nameplate. No uniform number is present in the jersey’s current configuration. The left sleeve displays the Pirates’ classic Jolly Roger team emblem, while the opposite sleeve carries the distinctive black-and-gold memorial patch featuring the number 7 within a Stargell Star.
The jersey retains its original Majestic Authentic Collection tagging and professional team-issued construction. Its materials, lettering, sleeve emblems and commemorative patch are consistent with Pittsburgh’s official 2011 road uniform specification.
Historical Documentation
Story & Historical Context
Brian Friday was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the third round of the 2007 MLB Draft with the 98th overall pick following a successful collegiate career at Rice University. A right-handed infielder capable of playing shortstop, second base and third base, Friday developed through the Pirates’ Minor League system and eventually reached Triple-A with the Indianapolis Indians.
Friday remained part of the Pirates organization during the 2011 season and was invited to the club’s Major League camp as a non-roster player. Although he did not appear in a regular-season Major League game, his position within the organization placed him among the players available to provide infield depth behind Pittsburgh’s established roster. He spent the competitive season with Triple-A Indianapolis before returning to the Pirates’ Major League camp again in 2012.
The 2011 season represented an important transitional chapter for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Under first-year manager Clint Hurdle, the club improved significantly after losing 105 games the previous year. Pittsburgh remained involved in the National League Central race during the summer and generated renewed excitement around PNC Park. The Pirates ultimately finished fourth in the division with a 72–90 record, but the campaign provided an early foundation for the franchise’s eventual return to postseason contention in 2013.
One of the jersey’s most historically significant features is the memorial patch on the right sleeve. The black-and-gold emblem displays the number 7 inside a Stargell Star and was worn by the Pirates throughout the 2011 season in honor of former manager Chuck Tanner, who died in February of that year. Tanner wore number 7 while managing Pittsburgh and led the “We Are Family” Pirates to the 1979 World Series championship.
Issued to Brian Friday for the 2011 season, this jersey connects a developing player within the Pirates organization to a period of transition in the franchise’s history. Its professional construction, individualized nameplate and season-specific Chuck Tanner memorial patch make it a distinctive team-issued artifact from the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 2011 campaign.
