The Item
This black Veolia Towers Hamburg away jersey was prepared for forward Christoph Philipps for the 2022–23 MagentaSport BBL Pokal. The jersey is classified as game-issued but not game-worn.
Manufactured by Craft in player size XL, the jersey features a lightweight black performance body with contrasting white rib-knit trim around the V-neck and arm openings. The front carries the circular Veolia Towers Hamburg crest, the Craft manufacturer branding, the Veolia principal sponsor logo and Philipps’ number 5 in white with a black interior outline. The lower front prominently displays the gold bird emblem and “28 BLACK” branding.
A competition-specific MagentaSport BBL Pokal patch is positioned on the upper front. Jerseys carrying this official cup identification were produced exclusively for the team and were not offered as retail versions through the Hamburg Towers fan shop.
The reverse features “PHILIPPS” in white lettering above the number 5, with “HAMBURG” positioned across the lower back. The monochrome black-and-white design formed part of the club’s newly introduced visual identity following its rebranding as Veolia Towers Hamburg.
The jersey was prepared as Philipps’ away uniform for potential road games in the 2022–23 BBL Pokal. Hamburg’s only appearance in the competition was a home fixture against MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg in the round of 16. Following the Towers’ elimination, no away cup fixture took place and the jersey remained unworn.
The founder of PhotoMatchForensics received the jersey directly from the Hamburg Towers. Its direct team provenance, player-specific customization and competition-exclusive cup patch establish it as an authentic game-issued uniform prepared for professional use.
Historical Documentation
Story & Historical Context
The 2022–23 campaign marked the beginning of a new chapter for professional basketball in Hamburg. Following the start of a naming partnership with the environmental services company Veolia, the organization introduced the Veolia Towers Hamburg identity together with a new logo, revised color palette and redesigned visual presentation. This black Christoph Philipps jersey belongs to that first season under the new identity.
Born in Munich and developed within the ratiopharm ulm organization, Christoph Philipps spent approximately 16 years in Ulm’s basketball program before joining Hamburg in the summer of 2022. The 2.03-meter forward arrived with Bundesliga experience and a reputation as a committed defender, disciplined team player and hard-working role player capable of guarding several positions.
Philipps wore number 5 during his season with the Veolia Towers. After several injury-affected years earlier in his career, the 2022–23 campaign became his most extensive professional season to that point. He made 51 appearances across the Basketball Bundesliga, EuroCup and BBL Pokal and was selected for the starting lineup 41 times. In addition to his defensive responsibilities, he demonstrated his offensive value in the EuroCup, averaging 6.1 points while converting 43.9 percent of his three-point attempts.
Hamburg entered the 2022–23 MagentaSport BBL Pokal in the round of 16. The Towers were drawn at home against MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg, with the game taking place in Hamburg on October 15, 2022. After overcoming an early deficit, the Towers built a lead that reached eleven points, but Ludwigsburg recovered during the closing stages and won the closely contested game 92–86.
Because Hamburg’s only cup appearance was played at home and ended in elimination, the team never advanced to a road fixture in which its black cup away uniforms could have been used. This number 5 jersey had already been prepared specifically for Philipps but consequently remained game-issued rather than game-worn.
Its dedicated MagentaSport BBL Pokal patch is particularly significant. Cup-badged jerseys of this type were reserved for the professional team and were not sold through the official fan shop. The jersey therefore differs from commercially available supporter merchandise and represents an unused player-exclusive uniform from the Towers’ 2022–23 cup equipment.
Beyond the cup competition, the season proved challenging for Hamburg. Following a promising start that included a notable victory over Bayern Munich, the team endured an extended series of defeats and a mid-season coaching change from Raoul Korner to Benka Barloschky. Hamburg ultimately secured its Bundesliga status and also qualified for the EuroCup playoffs.
The founder of PhotoMatchForensics received this jersey directly from the Hamburg Towers. Its uninterrupted team provenance, player-specific preparation and competition-exclusive configuration make it a documented artifact from the first season of the Veolia Towers Hamburg era and from Christoph Philipps’ sole campaign with the club.
