The Item
This Roanoke Dazzle jersey was game-worn by American guard Mike King during the 2003–04 NBA Development League season and has been successfully photo-matched to period imagery showing him wearing it.
Manufactured by Reebok Team Apparel, the jersey is constructed from blue performance mesh and carries a size 48 designation with an additional two inches of body length. Yellow and black rib-knit trim surrounds the neckline and arm openings, while matching yellow-and-black panels run vertically along both sides.
The front features the original Roanoke Dazzle basketball-and-star crest, the arched “ROANOKE” wordmark and King’s number 5 in yellow tackle twill with black outlining. Embroidered NBDL and Reebok logos appear on the upper chest. The reverse displays an embroidered NBDL logo above the arched “KING” lettering and a large number 5 in matching yellow-and-black construction.
The lower front tagging consists of the NBDL, Reebok Team Apparel and size 48 labels, together with separate “+2 LENGTH” and “2001–2002” season flags. Although the season flag predates King’s use of the jersey, this does not represent a conflict in its attribution. Roanoke used a leftover, previously uncustomized jersey shell produced for the franchise’s inaugural 2001–02 season and subsequently customized it with King’s name and number 5 for the 2003–04 campaign.
The documented photo match confirms that King wore the completed jersey during the 2003–04 season. The earlier season tag therefore identifies the production period of the reused team-issued jersey shell rather than the season of its eventual game use.
Historical Documentation
Story & Historical Context
The Roanoke Dazzle were one of eight original franchises established for the inaugural 2001–02 season of the National Basketball Development League. Created as the NBA’s official developmental system, the league provided emerging players with a direct pathway toward NBA organizations while placing professionally operated teams in smaller American markets.
Based in Roanoke, Virginia, the Dazzle played five seasons between 2001 and 2006. Their distinctive blue, yellow and black identity, together with the basketball-and-shooting-star team crest, became representative of the formative years of what would later evolve into the NBA G League.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Mike King played college basketball at George Washington University from 1997 to 2001. The 6-foot-5 guard became known for his versatility and defensive ability, earning the program’s Defense Award following his sophomore season. After completing his collegiate career, King entered the professional ranks and attended training camp with the Washington Wizards.
Roanoke selected King in the 2002 NBDL Draft. He appeared in 48 games during his first season with the Dazzle in 2002–03. King returned for the 2003–04 campaign wearing number 5 and developed into a significantly more important member of the rotation. He appeared in 46 games, started 25 of them and averaged 9.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
This jersey was worn by King during that 2003–04 season and has been successfully photo-matched to period imagery. The visual correspondence documents the same individual jersey being worn by King and provides direct photographic confirmation of its game use.
One of its most informative construction details is the sewn “2001–2002” season flag. King was not part of Roanoke’s inaugural-season roster, and the jersey was not worn by him during that season. Instead, the Dazzle used an unused leftover jersey shell originally manufactured for the franchise’s first NBDL campaign. The organization later customized the garment with King’s name and number 5 before placing it into service during the 2003–04 season.
Reusing remaining professional uniform stock was practical during the early years of the developmental league. In this case, the combination of the earlier manufacturing tag, later player customization and documented 2003–04 photo match provides insight into the equipment practices of an original NBDL franchise.
King subsequently continued his career with the Fayetteville Patriots before building an extensive professional résumé overseas. His international career included stops in Cyprus, Poland, Greece, France, Canada and Germany. During the 2009–10 season, he played for EnBW Ludwigsburg in the Basketball Bundesliga, creating an additional connection between this early American developmental-league artifact and German basketball history.
The jersey therefore combines two distinct periods of early NBDL history: its physical construction originated during the league’s inaugural 2001–02 season, while its confirmed game use occurred during Mike King’s 2003–04 campaign with the Roanoke Dazzle. Its surviving professional tagging, period customization and successful photo match make it a particularly well-documented artifact from the formative years of the NBA’s developmental system.
