The Jersey
This game-used Germany women’s national wheelchair basketball jersey was worn by Gesche Schünemann (#10) during the 2014 IWBF Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Toronto, Canada.
The white Spalding jersey features black graphic detailing, the German federal eagle crest, ING-DiBa sponsorship, Schünemann’s name and number 10, as well as the official IWBF tournament patch.
A particularly important element of the jersey is its direct provenance. Gesche Schünemann personally presented the jersey to the collector as a gift at the Inselparkhalle in Hamburg, Germany. At the time of the handover, she signed the front of the jersey and added the inscription “Game Used Jersey”, together with her number #10.
The combination of tournament use, player identification, official IWBF detailing and direct player-to-collector provenance makes this a highly documented piece of German wheelchair basketball history.
Historical Documentation
Story & Historical Context
The 2014 IWBF Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship was held in Toronto, Canada, and brought together the leading women’s national teams in the sport. Germany entered the tournament as one of the strongest teams in international wheelchair basketball, with Gesche Schünemann playing an important role wearing number 10.
Germany produced another successful international tournament and advanced all the way to the World Championship final. The German team ultimately finished with the silver medal, adding another major achievement to an era in which the national team was among the dominant forces in women’s wheelchair basketball.
This jersey was worn by Schünemann during the 2014 World Championship and later remained in her possession. Its provenance is especially significant because it did not enter the collection through an auction, dealer or memorabilia marketplace. Gesche Schünemann personally gave the jersey to the founder of PhotoMatchForensics as a gift at the Inselparkhalle in Hamburg.
During the handover, Schünemann signed the jersey herself and specifically wrote “Game Used Jersey” on the front, providing direct player confirmation of its use. Her signature and number #10 appear alongside the inscription.
With its World Championship history, Germany national-team design, official IWBF patch, Schünemann identification and direct personal provenance, the jersey represents a tangible piece of Germany’s silver-medal campaign at the 2014 World Championship and the international career of Gesche Schünemann.
