The Jersey

This white Hamburg Towers jersey was game-worn by Croatian guard Hrvoje Kovačević during the club’s 2018–19 ProA championship and promotion season. Manufactured by K1X Hardwood in size XL, the jersey features a lightweight mesh body with a tonal white-and-light-grey camouflage pattern. The front displays the black “TOWERS” wordmark above Kovačević’s player number “9.” Sponsor applications include Suzuki, Autohaus Pöhl and BARMER, while the reverse carries “KOVACEVIC” across the upper back, the edel-optics.de sponsor logo and a second black number “9.” The front does not display the later VTG main-sponsor logo. VTG was officially announced as the Hamburg Towers’ first main sponsor on January 24, 2019, after which the company’s logo appeared prominently on the chest. The absence of this application, together with the earlier “TOWERS” front configuration, strongly associates the jersey with the first half of the 2018–19 season, approximately between September 2018 and January 2019. This particular design was therefore used during a comparatively limited portion of the promotion campaign. The jersey was obtained directly from Kovačević through a personal jersey exchange with the founder of PhotoMatchForensics. A photographic record documents the exchange and provides direct provenance connecting the garment to the player. Kovačević also signed the front and added the handwritten inscription “GAME WORN,” personally confirming its use. The period-specific sponsor configuration, professional player customization, direct player-to-collector provenance, documentary photograph and Kovačević’s signed game-worn inscription collectively support its classification as an authentic Hrvoje Kovačević game-worn Hamburg Towers jersey from the 2018–19 season.

Story & Historical Context

The 2018–19 season became the most important campaign in the early history of the Hamburg Towers. After four seasons in Germany’s second-tier ProA, the club assembled a competitive roster under head coach Mike Taylor with the objective of reaching the Basketball Bundesliga for the first time. Hamburg completed the regular season in fourth place and advanced to the playoffs. The Towers overcame the top-seeded NINERS Chemnitz in the semifinals, securing promotion to the Basketball Bundesliga by reaching the ProA Finals. They subsequently defeated the Nürnberg Falcons to win the 2018–19 ProA championship and complete the first promotion in club history. Hrvoje Kovačević was an experienced member of the championship roster. The Croatian guard appeared in 31 games during the season, averaging approximately 3.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 13.1 minutes per game. His experience, defensive commitment and ability to support the backcourt provided valuable depth throughout the promotion campaign. Born on January 25, 1986, in Našice, Croatia, Kovačević developed through Croatian basketball and played for clubs including Svjetlost Brod, Zagreb, Cedevita and Cibona. His professional career also took him to Sweden, Poland and Germany. Before joining Hamburg, he played for MLP Academics Heidelberg from 2015 to 2017. He signed with the Towers in 2017 and remained with the club through its historic 2019 promotion, after which he concluded his professional playing career. The jersey represents the earlier visual identity of the Towers’ promotion season. Until January 23, 2019, the team played without a main sponsor displayed across the chest. VTG was presented as the club’s first official main sponsor on January 24, and its branding subsequently appeared prominently on the front of the uniform. Because this jersey retains the earlier “TOWERS” wordmark and does not carry the VTG chest logo, it is strongly associated with the first half of the season, before the sponsorship change. Its provenance is particularly direct. The founder of PhotoMatchForensics personally exchanged jerseys with Kovačević and received this garment from the player. The exchange was documented photographically, and Kovačević signed the jersey with a handwritten “GAME WORN” inscription. This personal transfer creates a continuous provenance trail from the player to the collection. The jersey therefore represents more than an individual piece of game-used equipment. It documents the first phase of the Hamburg Towers’ historic promotion season, the club’s uniform appearance before the introduction of its first main sponsor and the final championship campaign of Hrvoje Kovačević’s professional career.
