Damon Stoudamire

This red Houston Rockets jersey was professionally prepared for Damon Stoudamire during the 2008–09 NBA season. Although customized for potential use by Stoudamire, it is classified as game-issued rather than game-worn. This jersey documents a brief and largely unrealized connection between Damon Stoudamire and the Houston Rockets near the end of his playing career. Stoudamire completed the 2007–08 NBA season with the San Antonio Spurs after reaching a buyout agreement with the Memphis Grizzlies. He briefly started for San Antonio while Tony Parker was injured but later moved into a limited reserve role. Following the season, Stoudamire considered attending training camp with the Houston Rockets as he evaluated whether to continue his NBA career. Houston prepared this red number “20” jersey for his potential use during the 2008–09 season. The accompanying team and MeiGray documentation formally confirms that the garment was made for Stoudamire and registered within the NBA Authentication Database under number AM007145. However, Stoudamire did not ultimately attend Rockets training camp and never appeared in an official game for the franchise. The jersey therefore remains game-issued rather than game-worn. The 2008–09 Rockets finished the regular season with a 53–29 record under head coach Rick Adelman. Led by Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, Ron Artest and a deep supporting roster, Houston defeated the Portland Trail Blazers in the opening round of the playoffs. This marked the franchise’s first playoff-series victory since 1997. The Rockets then pushed the eventual NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers to seven games in the Western Conference Semifinals. Born in Portland, Oregon, Stoudamire became one of the most recognizable undersized point guards of his generation. The Toronto Raptors selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft, making him the first draft selection in franchise history. He averaged 19.0 points and 9.3 assists during his debut season and was named the 1995–96 NBA Rookie of the Year. Nicknamed “Mighty Mouse,” Stoudamire later played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs. Across 13 NBA seasons, he recorded 11,763 points and 5,371 assists. His speed, scoring ability and playmaking allowed him to build a lengthy professional career despite standing approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall. After deciding not to continue with Houston, Stoudamire moved into coaching. In December 2008, he accepted a player-development position with Rice University, also located in Houston, before beginning a wider coaching career in college basketball and the NBA. This jersey represents the transitional period between Stoudamire’s playing and coaching careers. Although never used in an NBA game, it provides physical and documentary evidence that the Houston Rockets prepared for the possibility of adding the veteran point guard to their 2008–09 roster.
