The Item

This blue Orlando Magic alternate jersey was manufactured by Champion for Nick Anderson’s 1997–98 NBA season. The jersey features the Magic’s period pinstripe design, with the white “Orlando” wordmark and number 25 outlined in black across the front. The reverse displays “ANDERSON” above the large number 25 in matching layered tackle twill. The NBA logo is embroidered onto the upper chest, while the neckline and arm openings are finished with black-and-white striped trim. The lower front contains the original Champion size 52 label alongside a team-exclusive identification tag reading “Designed & Tailored by Champion Exclusively for the Orlando Magic.” The adjacent season identifier is marked “1997–98,” and the jersey was produced with an additional four inches of body length. The jersey exhibits substantial signs of prolonged use. Visible characteristics include marks and discoloration across the fabric, wear to the applied lettering and numbers, and pronounced deterioration of the lower tagging. The size and team-identification tags show fading, fraying, creasing and general abrasion consistent with repeated wear, washing and handling. This tag wear is particularly noteworthy. Based on the experience of the PhotoMatch Forensics founder, several Orlando Magic jerseys from this era have previously appeared on eBay described as game-used while retaining unusually clean tags with little or no visible deterioration. The tags on this jersey present a distinctly different condition, displaying extensive wear consistent with the heavily used state of the garment as a whole. Although tag condition alone cannot establish game use, its wear provides an important supporting characteristic when evaluated together with the jersey’s construction, provenance and other physical evidence.
Historical Documentation

Story & Historical Context

The 1997–98 season represented a transitional period for the Orlando Magic. The roster was led by newly appointed head coach Chuck Daly and was attempting to remain competitive while Penny Hardaway missed much of the campaign because of a knee injury. Orlando finished the regular season with a 41–41 record. Nick Anderson assumed an increased offensive responsibility during this period. He appeared in 58 games, started 44 of them and averaged 15.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. His contribution was particularly important during Hardaway’s extended absence, making Anderson one of the central figures in Orlando’s offense throughout the season. Anderson already occupied a special place in franchise history. Selected by Orlando in the first round of the 1989 NBA Draft, he was the first player ever drafted by the expansion franchise. Over the following decade, he became one of the organization’s foundational players and an important figure in the Magic’s development from a new NBA team into an Eastern Conference contender. This blue number 25 road jersey originates from Anderson’s ninth season with the Orlando Magic. It carries the correct period Champion construction, size 52 designation, additional four inches of body length, Orlando Magic team-exclusive tagging and a dedicated 1997–98 season identifier. Its physical condition is central to its documentation. The jersey displays substantial overall wear, including visible marks, fabric deterioration and pronounced wear to the lower tagging. The Champion size label and adjacent team-identification tag are faded, frayed and heavily abraded, presenting a condition consistent with repeated wear and laundering. This characteristic distinguishes the jersey from several other Orlando Magic examples from the same era observed by the founder of PhotoMatch Forensics on eBay. Although those jerseys were advertised as game-used, their size and manufacturer tags appeared exceptionally clean and showed little evidence of repeated laundering or extended use. By contrast, the tags on this Nick Anderson jersey exhibit considerable deterioration that corresponds with the heavily worn condition visible throughout the garment. Tag wear must not be treated as independent proof of game use, since condition can be influenced by storage, laundering and subsequent handling. In this case, however, the consistency between the worn tags, the visible use across the jersey and the correct team-specific construction provides meaningful supporting evidence for its documented game-worn classification. The jersey survives as a heavily used artifact from the later phase of Nick Anderson’s Orlando career and from a distinctive period in the franchise’s history. Its player-specific specifications, season-dated tagging and extensive physical wear make it an important representative example of an Orlando Magic game jersey from the 1997–98 NBA season.
